DRAW POKER

How To Play Draw Poker

Although Draw poker is the initial form of poker upon which all variants are built it is not so common in casinos. A beginner that wishes to start with a version which is easy to learn and which will give a good foundation for all future poker play should try and find Draw poker. To get started with this type of poker a player must know the basics of the hand rankings and understand the layout of the play and bets.  While this information is easy to come by and understand it shouldn’t be underestimated how much a little study beforehand can improve the game

How to Play Draw Poker

In Draw poker there are no communal cards. All players will receive five hidden cards each to form the best hand out of. After the first round where players have decided to bet, call, raise or fold they can choose to discard as many cards as they want. The dealer will then replace the missing cards and after an additional round of bets it is time for the finale, the Showdown. In the Showdown the player with the best hand will win the pot and here it is important to understand the ranking and value of cards if ties should occur. For an example if to players both have a Full House  which is three cards of a kind and a pair, a Full House of Kings over Jacks is beaten by a Full House of Aces over jacks. Should there be such a tie that no individual cards can justly determine the winner the two players get to split the pot.

Betting In Draw Poker

Draw Poker is played with an Ante. The Ante is a smaller bet that is paid by each player to a common pot which will form the prize money at the end. When all players have received their five cards and assessed them the player sitting to the left of the dealer will start the betting. If they don’t bet it is viewed as a Pass unless they discard all of their cards on the table and Fold. If a player makes a pass then the next player can do the same or choose to bet or fold. If the other players want to stay in the round after betting they must Call and match any outstanding bets. This can then be followed by a Raise which is another bet. The round of bets goes around the table and the dealer also bets and this is done again after the replacement cards for the discards have been dealt.

Basic Draw Poker Strategy

To be a successful Draw poker player it is essential to understand when to fold and when to continue the game. When playing with money a player is looking to win the pot and he must carefully assess whether it is worth to discard cards and take a chance on getting the right ones in the replacement cards. Since there are no open cards there is no way of knowing what has been dealt and a player must focus solely on his own hand and its possibilities. Therefore it is recommended to learn about hands, their ranks and the probabilities of getting them before entering any money into this version of poker.
